  • In a recent study of America's top research universities, UCSB ranks No. 2 among public universities nationwide. The rankings cited in The Rise of American Research Universities (Johns Hopkins University Press) were based on objective data such as research dollars, prestigious fellowships, and number of publications, instead of reputation, which the authors say can be misleading.

  • UCSB is an elected member of the Association of American Universities, placing it with Harvard, Stanford, and UC Berkeley among the 62 leading institutions of higher learning in the United States and Canada.

  • UCSB has received a select Research I ranking as one of America's top research institutions by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching.

  • UCSB's renowned faculty numbers about 900 and includes a 1998 Nobel prize winner in chemistry, fellows of the National Endowment for the Humanities, recipients of the National Medal of Science, and members of the National Academy of Arts and Sciences, the National Academy of Sciences, and the National Academy of Engineering.

  • UCSB undergraduates are actively involved in the quest for new knowledge. Undergraduates receive approximately $250,000 annually to pursue research and other scholarly activities.

  • A total of 29 prestigious scholarly journals have editorial headquarters in the College of Letters and Science, the College of Engineering, and the Graduate School of Education.

  • Recognition of academic quality takes many forms. One of the most prestigious is support from the National Science Foundation. Seven of UCSB's eight national research centers and institutes are sponsored by NSF.

  • Nearly half (45%) of UCSB's academic departments and programs, including disciplines in the arts, humanities, and social sciences as well as the sciences and technology are ranked among the top 20 in the U.S. based on one or more indicators.

  • In a recent ranking of U.S. graduate programs conducted by the National Research Council, four UCSB graduate programs were ranked in the top 10 with acclaimed programs in geography, materials, religion, and physics. Graduate programs in chemical engineering, electrical engineering, ecology, anthropology, the geosciences and Spanish ranked in the top 20.
